Sioux Falls 1st Historic District Exhibit Opening Reception
This year, the Cathedral Historic District in Sioux Falls celebrates 50 years of being on the National Register of Historic Places. To commemorate the anniversary, the new exhibit Sioux Falls’ 1st Historic District will open April 4th in the Pettigrew Museum, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Admission is free!
Nestled in what is known as the North End, the Cathedral Historic District is one of Sioux Falls’ earliest and most well-preserved residential areas. Many of the striking homes and iconic buildings in the neighborhood were built between 1871 and 1925 for some of the city’s most well-known and successful residents. However, after World War II the neighborhood was at risk of losing its historic value. Thanks to the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act, local government boards, and community members, the Cathedral District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
