The South Dakota Air National Guard’s 114th Fighter Wing’s history began during World War II with the 356th Fighter Group. After initially flying the North American F-51 Mustang, the wing continued to transition through various turbo jet fighters to the current F-16 Fighting Falcon, which has been used since 1992.
Lt. Col. George A. Larson is a military and aviation writer with more than 22 years of service in the United States Air Force. The book South Dakota National Guard’s 114th Fighter Wing is part of the Images of Aviation series celebrating the history of flight.
